Light Scout Creative

And God said, "Let there be light. And God saw that the light was good." - Genesis 1 :3&4

Light is life. It is here now...the present...this moment. Light penetrates hearts. We crave it. We bask in it. We are wired to wake up because of it. We eat and breath because of it. 

When it's dark we look for it. We create our own light to avoid the darkness. In the night, we wait for morning; when it arrives we are thankful. Light wakes us up. It pulls us out of our homes. It makes us playful. Light gives warmth. Light gives sight and light gives life.

I look for light everyday. I love how it wraps around trees, mountains, hills, and people. I love how it penetrates water and pours through windows. I love that people smile in the sunshine. 

I have come to the realization that I take photographs because I love to find light. I am drawn to it. I am a light scout. I am a creative. I am a Light Scout Creative, and I give thanks to One that said, "Let there be light." 

This beautiful family is awesome. We took a break to let kids be kids. 

I love the sun in her hair. 

This reminds me that in every moment we leave something behind. Let's make it good. 

Kids are amazing, funny, brave, insightful, honest, and beautiful.

Danger Keep Out

With the big rain storm hitting California, I had to watch the waves crash against the jetty at Morro Rock in Morro Bay, CA. I had an appointment with eye doctor in Morro Bay, then made a quick stop to see the waves before heading off to work.

I took these photos because they remind me that some of us are wired to push the line between safety and danger. We don't want a false line. So, we move it inch by inch. We test its safety and sense of danger. We want to see where we can stand and know it is the true edge.

With all the pushing, nudging, and testing the line, it is important to know that the line must change.  A person returning to a once familiar position of the safety's edge may find the earth has fallen away or the waves and storms are bigger. Just like these waves are a force to consider so are the waves of life. Keep your eyes open and never turn your back. 

Now, before you call this unknown couple crazy, they were not in danger of a crashing wave. The focal length of the lens compressed the distance between them and the surf. It was safe. They were on another grouping of rocks. The biggest danger was slipping on a wet rock. 

Find the Magic

I had an amazing day in Morro Bay photographing this wonderful family.  We hiked, played, explored, and just enjoyed the light. I love days like this.

Photography with kids needs to be fun. Everything is a game for a child - exploring, touching, listening, looking, etc. A child engages almost all of their senses.

As adults, we have touched dirt or grass so many times it has lost it's magic. A child touches dirt with a sense of wonder; dirt does stuff. It sticks to things (faces), it changes color, it is smooth or rough, it blows away in the wind, grass and trees grow out of it, houses are built on it, animals live under it, bugs and toy trucks move on it! It is magic.

With this little guy, the photography happened between the fun. When this family looks at these photos years from now, they will remember him as he was - a playful, inquisitive, active little guy. As their photographer, I want to give them real photos that will bring back amazing memories and the magic.
